MUSIC PRODUCTION | SUSTAINABLY

I’m Demetry Malahoff. I run one of Australia’s most environmentally friendly recording studios in (Meanjin) Brisbane, Australia. Here we value integrity and humanity in music above all else.
My studio is a safe space where you can feel free to make whatever your heart desires. I believe without any doubt this is how great music is made. I provide a gentle hand in helping your songs come into the world. If you love to make music, and like to make it with other people, call me and we’ll have a coffee and talk.
Professionally designed and sound treated, the studio sits in a repurposed cellar in the tranquil Samford Valley. The studio is designed to monitor and track in the same room taking after Dan Carey’s method. There’s no barrier to communication.
There’s a kitchen, which we use to make group lunches, a pool for the hot summer months, and walking trails just at the end of the street.
About The Studio

Currently, this is one of Australia’s most sustainable recording studios. This is achieved through monitoring our emissions from personal transportation, electricity, transportation of audio gear, and transportation of precious metals used in our pro-audio gear.
To prevent simply carbon offsetting everything, we take steps to reduce our impact before the fact. Here is a list of how we reduce our impact:
The studio is run completely on solar.
Our heating and cooling electricity is non-existent thanks to the studio being built underground.
All food waste is composted on site.
Lunch is provided and typically made from scratch with minimal plastic use and when possible from locally sourced produce.
We don’t use energy hungry permanent cloud backups services.
Digital outboard gear is given preference over analogue.
Audio gear is purchased through sustainable businesses, followed by second-hand local, second-hand global, then brand new as a last resort.
Unused gear is donated, resold, or recycled.
Gear sharing is encouraged and actively sought after.
We repair instead of replacing.
Following these preventative measures we calculate our remaining carbon debt which is then offset through reforestation, and planting of degraded land in Australia through Carbon Positive Australia.
Sustainability

Over years I’ve collected pro-audio gear and instruments which are all at your disposal. Primarily audio is recorded through an Antelope Audio Discrete 8 and Neve 517 preamps. I monitor through the classic NS-10M and Adam T5V speakers. Sessions are run in Protools or Logic Pro with the option to bring your own laptop to monitor. The computer has Kontakt 7 with a healthy supply of self designed sample instruments. There is an upright piano and a Tama Starcaster drum kit. You can find photos of synth, microphone, and acoustic instrument collections below. Some recent additions include a pair of VR1 ribbon microphones.
